The recent spate of insurgent attacks on haulage truck drivers\u00a0<\/span>in the West African sub-region\u00a0<\/span>has put stakeholders on high alert as measures to\u00a0<\/span>address the threat effectively are explored<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Reports were rife three weeks ago about trucks numbering over eighteen (18) that were en route to Ghana from Niger being attacked by suspected jihadists in Burkina Faso, and the trucks being burnt beyond recognition. The number of drivers who perished is yet to be known.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"To help address the threat, the Ghana Shippers\u2019 Authority (GSA) collaborated with the security services to train haulage truck drivers on some protective measures they should adopt to escape from such incidents or defend themselves. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The pertinent information was inculcated in the GSA\u2019s annual\u00a0<\/span>sensitization workshop for haulage truck drivers\u00a0<\/span>which was held\u00a0<\/span>at Tema on Wednesday 17th May 2023<\/span>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Personnel from the Military, Police and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA)\u00a0<\/span>took the truck drivers through the Precautionary and Reactionary Security Assessment on the transit corridors.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Capt. Ishmael Frimpong<\/span>\u00a0from the\u00a0<\/span>Ghana Armed Forces Training School,\u00a0admonished\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>truck drivers to exercise restraint<\/span>\u00a0should they be\u00a0\u00a0confronted by such insurgents and cooperate with them to preserve their lives. He further advised that they should subtly take note of the language they speak, their general physical appearance and the type of weapons they use to assist the security agencies trace them.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"In a<\/span>n address read on her behalf by the<\/span>\u00a0Head of Public Relations,\u00a0Ms. Bernice Natue<\/span>\u00a0of the GSA, the CEO of the GSA,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Ms. Benonita Bismarck, said\u00a0<\/span>that,\u00a0<\/span>the sensitization workshop by the GSA was aimed at building the capacity of the truck drivers\u00a0<\/span>to guard against the anti-social practices of the insurgents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“The heightened security concerns and the risks posed to transit consignment, the trucks and in particular the life of the drivers and their assistants have largely informed the selection of the topics for the workshop” she noted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"The Head of the Freight and Logistics Department of the GSA<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0Mr. Fred Asiedu Dartey\u00a0said<\/span>\u00a0that<\/span>\u00a0recent happening<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0show that transit trucks are<\/span>\u00a0now<\/span>\u00a0being targeted by insurgents,\u00a0<\/span>unlike previously<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe insurgency has been around for some time, but the focus\u00a0<\/span>h<\/span>a<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0not been on transit trucks, but it does appear that they have also become targets for the insurgents\u201d, he stated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The sensitization workshop also featured presentations on the impact of the ECOWAS Brown Card on transit operations, Management of Transit Incidences along Ghana\u2019s Transit Corridors, and the Status of the Axle Load\u00a0Stations along Ghana\u2019s transit corridors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
