As part of efforts to address the declining rate\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in the volumes\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of transit\u00a0<\/span><\/span>trade,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>also\u00a0<\/span><\/span>improve transit trade along Ghana’s corridors, the Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA) has propos<\/span><\/span>ed<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the creation of<\/span><\/span>\u00a0a platform that allows importers from\u00a0<\/span><\/span>landlocked<\/span><\/span>\u00a0countries\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>have easy access to the CFA\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Francs\u00a0<\/span><\/span>for shipping related payments.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The proposal<\/span><\/span>\u00a0was made to Ecobank Ghana<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>follow<\/span><\/span>ing<\/span><\/span>\u00a0several complaints by cargo truck drivers and importers from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger over the difficult<\/span><\/span>ies<\/span><\/span>\u00a0they face<\/span><\/span>\u00a0when advancing<\/span><\/span>\u00a0shipping related payments in Ghana.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"At a meeting between officials of the two organizations held on\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Thursday\u00a0<\/span><\/span>13th April 2023 at the Shippers’ House in Accra, it was agreed that the practice of carrying cash, usually in CFA\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Francs\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>cater for<\/span><\/span>\u00a0cargo handling obligations and other services\u00a0<\/span><\/span>posed enormous challenges and also<\/span><\/span>\u00a0creates security risks\u00a0<\/span><\/span>such as<\/span><\/span>\u00a0robberies<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

During the meeting, the GSA proposed that a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>payment product\u00a0<\/span><\/span>should be designed\u00a0<\/span><\/span>for importers from the landlocked countries to eliminate the phenomenon where importers carry huge sums of money\u00a0<\/span><\/span>across the borders<\/span><\/span> to pay cargo truck drivers and other shipping services in Ghana.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"The Head of Freight and Logistics Department<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Mr. Fred Asiedu-Dartey reported that per the Bank of Ghana rules, there is no restriction on the Commercial banks\u00a0<\/span><\/span>with respect to<\/span><\/span>\u00a0trading in CFA<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Francs<\/span><\/span>. He disclosed that, the payment product, when finalized, will go a long a way to improve the declining rate of transit volumes at Ghana’s Ports.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“We have a payment problem that has translated into a safety problem because the truck drivers park on the shoulders of the road, waiting for payments from the importers and their agents before they move. This is why the payment\u00a0<\/span><\/span>platform\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>by\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Ecobank is crucial to addressing not only the decline in transit volumes at our Ports, but also the risks these trucks pose to other road users” he noted.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
